Wisconsin Literacy provided input on the Joint Commission's new guide for hospitals, Advancing Effective Communication, Cultural Competence, and Patient-and Family-Centered Care: A Roadmap for Hospitals. This inspirational guide emphasizes health care communication, cultural competence and patient-and family-centered care.
Early in 2010, the Joint Commission forwarded a draft of the guide to a variety of organizations involved with health and health literacy, including Wisconsin Literacy. The staff at Wisconsin Literacy provided input that was included in the final report.
These revised standards will be published in the 2011 edition of the Hospital Accreditation Manual; however, they will not count against an organization's accreditation decision for at least one year. During this learning period, the Joint Commission will collect data on the performance of hospitals against the new standards and determine an appropriate date for full implementation.
The Joint Commission accredits and certifies more than 17,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States.
